Klingons on the other hand would have a readily large force of the smaller B'rel and K'vort class Birds-of-Prey from the Late-TOS era well into the TNG era while still fielding the larger K'tinga and Vor'cha class, culminating in the Negh'var class near the end of the Dominion war. In the TNG era, Romulan battle doctrine would eschew the smaller craft in favor of larger ships such as the D'deridex class Warbird, an aggressive cloaking craft comparable to a Battleship. Romulans and Klingons both utilized these at different eras. They usually take the place of smaller scout craft with a strong emphasis on attack power. :-)īird-of-prey is both a designation and a 'class' of ship.īird-of-prey's in TOS era were smaller, strike craft generally with cloaking technology. After Star Trek III, fans suggested that there was an alliance where technology was exchanged prior to The Enterprise Incident. Discovery arguably suggested the tech was from that one House. Enterprise arguably suggested they first got it from the Xyrillians. Thus, how Klingons got cloaking devices was never firmly established. It would not be a leap to suggest that the TOS Romulans stole Klingon designs as well. That's why the ship used a vaguely similar saucer section and warp nacelles. Matt Jeffries intended the original Romulan Bird-of-Prey design to suggest that they stole Earth's technology. The Romulans could have stolen the design. All Spock says in The Enterprise Incident is that Intelligence reports Romulans using Klingon design. Romulans were never established in lore as having exchanged technology IIRC. How the Klingons gained cloaking technology in Star Trek III was never explained prior to the episode. In fact, invisibility is a logical application of holographic technology especially for a martial culture. It's not a coincidence that a ship with a holodeck would have a clocking device.
